What is a Endodontist?

An Endodontist is a specialist in the prevention, cause, diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease of the soft tissue (pulp and nerves) of teeth. Following the achievement of a doctorate in dental medicine, the dentist must then complete at least two additional years of advanced training to receive accreditation. The Endodontic Specialist is only one of the nine specialists recognized by The American Dental Association (ADA). This knowledge enables the doctor to perform routine Root Canal Therapy as well as difficult and more complex cases along with the ability to carry out Endodontic Surgical procedures if needed.

What is Endodontic Treatment?

When the inside of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed endodontic treatment is necessary to save the tooth. Trauma, deep decay, large fillings and cracks in the tooth may cause pulpal injury and death of the soft tissue. If this occurs the removal of the bacteria and decayed debris is accomplished through Root Canal Therapy. An access hole allows tiny files to scrape, scrub and shape the inside of the canal space clean. After flushing out all of the debris, medication is often placed and the canals are filled and sealed. This process may involve one or more visits depending on the severity of the infection and complexity of the tooth anatomy. Though the access hole is filled, a final restoration is imperative for the support of the natural tooth structure.

Why do I need Endodontic Treatment?

If left untreated the bacteria and infection may spread to surrounding tissues. Necrosis (death) of the pulp and nerves causes an abcess to form at the root tip and into bone structure supporting the tooth. This may result in painful swelling that can spread into other areas of the head, neck and face. If left unchecked, substantial bone loss may occur along with drainage into the mouth and the release of bacterial toxins systemically. With prompt treatment, in the majority of cases, the tooth can be successfully treated and restored to proper function.

Dr. Patrick Carrigan, a recognized leader in the advanced science of Endodontics, welcomes the opportunity to ensure that you receive the finest treatment possible and the most successful long term prognosis for healthy teeth.
