WHAT IS YOUR HOME DENTAL ROUTINE?
Are you noticing oral health problems, even though you follow a regular home dental routine? Do you know if your habits are healthy for your mouth? Life can get in the way of a good home dental routine, whether you’re rushing to get to work or school, or simply too busy to think much about it.
However, no matter how busy you are, a good home dental care routine is important, especially when it comes to keeping your teeth and gums healthy and warding off painful or expensive oral health issues. Here are the most crucial parts of any home dental routine to keep your smile bright, healthy, and fresh.
BRUSH TWICE A DAY
Brushing your teeth might sound obvious, but many people skip this important step in their hurry to get out the door in the morning, or because they’re too tired at the end of the day. Good teeth brushing habits are one of the most vital parts of keeping your teeth strong and healthy.
Brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle each morning and every evening after your last meal of the day. It’s important not to go to sleep with any food particles in your teeth, as they sit there for hours and provide a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
Brush for two minutes, covering the entire surface of each tooth, and ensuring you get to the harder-to-reach areas. Don’t forget to brush your tongue to remove bacteria and any food debris!
FLOSS!
This commonly-skipped, but very important part of the home dental routine should be done at least once per day. Flossing eliminates food trapped between your teeth, prevents bad breath, and stops plaque and bacteria from building up and causing cavities and other oral health concerns.
Floss gently between each tooth, moving the floss against the curve of your teeth. Rinse the floss or use a new part of the floss for each tooth so that debris from one area isn’t worked back between your teeth.
USE MOUNTHWASH
Use antibacterial mouthwash each day after brushing and flossing. Antibacterial mouthwash controls the growth of bacteria that can cause cavities and bad breath. Swish your mouthwash around for 30 to 40 seconds, getting it around every area–but be sure not to swallow it!
SCHEDULE YOUR DENTAL VISITS
See your dentist every six months for a professional checkup and cleaning. Even the most careful home dental routine may miss issues that aren’t visible without professional equipment. Your dentist will notice any concerns and thoroughly clean the crevices and corners of your mouth that can’t be reached during at-home cleaning.
